  1. They won’t.

Both the libs and Tories want to suck up to him as best they can so they can get his factories and data centres built here.

    >Government should lead the exodus from X

Problem with this is the conservatives arent going to stop using it because a good portion of their base uses X so that means the liberals would be at a disadvantage so they wont unilaterally disarm

    >He’s not on Threads at all, and he hasn’t posted on Bluesky in nine months.

Yeah cause they suck and no one but extremely partisan liberals use them making them completely insufferable

    >As long as politicians and decision-makers continue to favour X as their text-based social media platform of choice, that’s where conversations will happen.

Disagree – politicians go to X because thats where the people are not the other way around. no one is basing where they spend time online based on where people like soloman or miller are on this is an extremely journalist brained take

    >Until Canadian lawmakers decide to either ban X or leave it en masse, users like Claire will continue to pay the price for public participation in Canada’s main digital town square — one where they face sexual violence and are further punished if they dare to speak out about it.

unless were gonna go full fascist and ban VPNs at the same time you cant stop the vast majority of people from going to X especially since all the americans will still be on it. it also does nothing to protect people like claire whos images can stll be photoshopped and then shared around other social media sites like reddit, facebook, insta etc no this is the tyee fundamentally not understanding how tech works. Also doesnt stop anyone from firing up a localized version of stable diffusion and getting it to do this as well the cats really out of the bag on this one.

Plus the idea of us creating our own version of chinas great firewall doesnt sit well with me and frankly a free and open internet needs to be protected even if it means stuff like this happens

  3. Why don’t people who can actually stomach getting on these platforms just produce a whole lot of embarrassing images of these pot-bellied, small-dick losers and flood the world with them?

I mean, I know that no one really needs to see that stuff, but I have always found that bullies look like idiots when they have to deal with personal humiliation.

    I don’t disagree in principle.
But no they don’t. They are busy.

People need to pull their own weight, at least the weight of their own family and talk to their kids.

  5. I don’t wish to diminish the agency and responsibility of adults intentionally using such software to produce and publish defamatory, libelous or hateful material. But you know what? It’s abuse of the male half of the population too, to expose them to such imagery. I’m pretty sure it’s not healthy or good for a teen boy to be able to generate explicit porno of some girl or teacher or whatever that he has a crush on. I’m pretty sure those baby-faced hentai AI porn services which are already widely available in the US also probably also not healthy.

Or: the patriarchy hurts men too; such acts involve a kind of self-mutilation in the process.

I experimented with AI generation of eroticized imagery back in 2021 – 2022 when StyleGAN first became a thing and before it really went mainstream. I trained a model on hundreds of thousands of shirtless selfie photos I scraped from the web and it could produce infinite variations of the hunk-in-the-bathroom-mirror pose. Once I teased out the latent parameters I could do things like generate the same photo with the same musculature, same pose, same expression, same bathroom – but there’s a slider that affects the skin complexion. Found another latent variable correlated with hairiness, and one with bulge size. It’s surprising what AI can successfully abstract.

This was dangerously enticing to me (as someone who likes to look at images of beefy shirtless men). I could see how one could spend a very long time hunting for synthetic perfection. I started avoiding AI outputs as cognitive hazards around that time and I still tend to avoid sustained exposure to AI-generated imagery as much as I can but it’s getting hard to tell.

More generally: I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop. AI generated child porn will be found to be protected by the first amendment in the USA. I’m afraid their courts will cling to their absolutist interpretations of the 1st amendment unto the complete derangement of American society. Their US courts have already ruled that hentai and even near-photorealistic drawings of child abuse, are protected as art, when they’re not photos of actual scenes. The American courts have largely rejected the legal premises that allowed the Candian Supreme Court to uphold our laws on this which extend even to explicit written descriptions.

It’s going to be like the problem with men bringing back illegal pornography from Japan which is drawn but which still depicts illegal acts in Canada, and so is illegal in Canada, but times a million because it’s the USA right next to us.
