It’s illegal in Costa Rica to import and/or poses any wild animal.

That’s why Circuses are virtually ilegal and don’t come anymore.

It’s not illegal anywhere as long as you are licensed and a Zoo ..

  4. There is no capybara on the official list of animals explicitly banned for private ownership in Ukraine (there’s no exact list). That doesn’t automatically make it legal or practical, but it’s not specifically prohibited by name.

US isn’t the only federalized state, it should be the only country with the subdivision seperated on this post

The map is wrong. It’s legal to own a capybara in the UK. (One probably needs a licence under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act.)

I live in Colorado and today I learned…our bureaucrats took the time to make it illegal to own a capybara…..

  8. How would you even get the information? I am a German lawyer and it would take me hours just to know the law for capybaras in my own country. So I call mapporn bullshit.

  9. Own as an individual I assume? Because there are capybaras in the UK and they’re not wild so they’re owned by a business or charity at least

Don’t show my daughter this, I’d never hear the end of it.

From what i quickly found in the website of Belarus‘ Embassy in the USA , you can have an exotic pet in Belarus , but you need to have stuff like documents and vaccinations, though that’s apparently not much abt owning as it is about importing them into Belarus , so we could say that if that meets the requirements for import , you could MAYBE own one

Absolutely illegal in Brazil. Even recently, an „influencer“ who owned a capybara had to return it to the wild.

Worry not capybara fans of the UK, once I’ve got through with collaborating with the raccoon invasion no one is going to care if you have some capys in your yard, it would be like worrying about about the Feng Shui of a nuclear crater.

  14. I’m from Brazil and it’s not as simple as that. Capivaras are wild animals and as such are actually protected by the Constitution, you can’t even transport one without the proper governmental authorization. If you just snatch one from nature you will face fines and possibly jail too since it’s an Environmental Crime. They’re not pets.

In order to legally have a Capivara you first need to contact IBAMA. Then you need a whole bunch of documentation showing that you have the financial means to take care of it, that the animal will be well kept and that your home (or place where the animal will be staying) is properly kept, and that the animal will come from a licensed „criadouro“ (breeding site).

It’s a very hard process and most people won’t ever be able to do it, as it’s also very expensive.
