    I’m 46 and I don’t use that phrase for a Chinese takeout, it’s a Chinese takeout from a Chinese takeaway / restaurant.

I know it’s a phrase that was used very commonly.
I had a friend at schook though whose parents owned a Chinese takeaway Restaurant, they would roll their eyes when someone said it, so I grew up knowing not to call it that I suppose.

    > Laura Anne Jones told BBC Radio Wales that the offensive word she used in a WhatsApp chat „was a term used for a takeaway“ during her childhood.

And when you got caught using that phrase, were you discussing a takeaway?

I mean this is even a point in an episode of Peep Show that contained a casual racist that aired… 21 years ago. Being 46 means nothing.

So she thinks Chinky is a Chinese takeaway. Yet she used it in the phrase „No chinky spies for me! „, has she been vetting her local to check they haven’t been infiltrated by the Ministry of State Security?

Makes literally 0 fucking sense. She’s had weeks to come up with an excuse as well.

  5. SeePerspectives on

She wasn’t talking about takeaways though, she was talking about people. In what world does “no c****y spies for me” have anything to do with food?

Pathetic excuse from a pathetic excuse of a human

  6. She is right. She is racist because she joined Reform UK, the slur is just a symptom.

  7. You could say casual racism is a chink in Reform’s armour that they wear as a badge of honour

Can we not just challenge these people with more than just calling them racist.

They are all racist, they are reform.

It is wasted breath, focus on the fact they a bought and paid for liars, that they also hate poor people on benefits, that any normal working or disabled person will not be better off if they have power.

Take a lesson from America, these people do not want the best for the country or it’s people, they want the best for themselves

That’s going to affect her popularity with Reform voters. Denying she’s racist, I mean.

  10. “I’m 46 and it was a long time ago”, oh do fuck off, and when you’ve done that fuck off some more. I’ve a decade on her and haven’t used that term
    In decades

I love how all these former Tories are now outing themselves as fascists. I feel so much better for hating them in the 80’s.

  12. Very few people are happy to admit to being a racist. They will come up with the most ridiculous mental gymnastics to argue against that label which is why I am very much looking forward to seeing all of the various argument their voters will come up as to why they voted for them which definitely aren’t because Reform are the only party a racist can feel comfortable in.

Reform are slowly slipping in the polls, and look like by the election they won’t be gaining many seats at all.

That sort of language will only make her more popular with core uneducated voters who probably use similar language themselves.

It’s so obviously a racist slur. 46 is not an excuse acting like that’s old is getting my back up 😅

  16. Dismal_Fox_22 on

The “bad excuse” for the “accidently” racist comments are purposeful. It’s dog whistling. They are accidently saying it so people know how they really feel and they are illogically apologising so that people know they don’t really mean the apology. It’s all disingenuous and it’s all contrived.

Reform is the racist party and they are actively recruiting racists. I believe all the “old school friends” calling out Farage’s school racism were stooges paid by the party to reinforce his racism with voters. For them, the accusation of racism is a good thing

I’m surprised reform members are even apologising about slurs

We haven’t met US levels yet

  18. DeltaPapaWhisky on

Racist from racist party says racist thing before denying being a racist.

The Reformorons are the very worst of us.

  19. LongjumpingFee2042 on

I haven’t heard that slur in about 20 years. Talk about a blast from the past

Ever so slightly off-topic but I cannot stand that news organisations seem to rarely actually quote, in context, whatever it was people said when they’re being accused of being racist or whatever else – it always seems to be tiptoed round. I shouldn’t have to check Reddit comments just to make an informed decision on whether or not I consider what they said was racist, or to even find out what the actual quote was in the first place. If you’re younger or not brought up in the UK, and not sure what the “term used for a Chinese takeaway” is, this article is completely useless.

I see it from all angles. Sometimes I find out elsewhere what was said and think “is that it?” and other times I think “that’s even worse than the article makes it out to be” but I am pretty much never able to form an opinion just on the article itself. All it does is help spread misinformation because you’re not being told the relevant facts.

  21. stools_in_your_blood on

I don’t mind „chinky“ in the „Chinese takeaway“ sense. Context matters, if it’s just being used as a slang term for a kind of food then there’s no need to see hatred where there isn’t any.

I wouldn’t use it to refer to a person though.

  22. Amazing they need to keep reminding us this over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over……………

  23. ElCaminoInTheWest on

I remember that term being wildly un-PC in 1995. Pretending to be shocked that it’s not acceptable in 2026 is a wild take.

  24. Celtic_Eagle1888 on

Who actually cares, it means nothing. Get over it, have a cry, whatever. Nobody cares about foreigners anymore

  25. „I am not a racist by any stretch of the imagination.“

Strangely, my imagination doesn’t feel stretched in the slightest by the idea.  If anything, it’s a bit bored by how unimaginative it is.

  26. BlondePotatoBoi on

The same way Nige claimed to have been racist in a „respectful way“ or whatever it was.

Sure. We were born at night, but not *last* night.

  27. „I just casually used a slur that only racists use, this doesn’t mean anything lads. It’s really mean of you to try and connect my language and behaviour with my beliefs!“
