Bearing in mind this man also does not believe in climate change, Trump, the Detroit automakers and the oil lobby are all in violent agreement that the future is SUVs. North American automotive is just as doomed south of the border, this play is just for the last generation that can be forced to buy overpriced, oversized, smog machines.

Hopefully China feels differently, and we can finally get some cheap EVS without the price fixing of American auto. I suspect we’ll know within about 10 days, considering Carney’s trip to China.

  3. Then we don’t need cars made in the US. We’re a net importer of cars, stop buying American and let their garbage car companies collapse

Is it really our product in the strictest sense when the firms making them are US in origin and fundamentally multinational in origin? One of the bits I’ve had a lot of trouble wrapping my head around when it comes to a lot of business aligned nationalist thinking is the fact that you can’t expect national business might in a global economy the same way you could in a more mercantile one. The viability of multinational firms depends in large part on their multinational spread. If you start restricting that you ultimately end up sabotaging your own firms as markets close off or competitors move in to voids they once filled.

Open the doors to Chinese made cars and also bring in European cars as well that haven’t been allowed to be sold in Canada because of US.

Psychotic lunatic.. but we do make toilet tissue:

Canada is a major supplier of toilet tissue to the U.S., providing a significant portion of its imports, with recent figures from 2023 showing Canada as the top exporter, supplying roughly 66% of the U.S. imported toilet paper, valued at around $276 million (USD), or approximately 97 million kilograms, though the U.S. also relies heavily on Canadian pulp for its own production.

*“The USMCA is the largest, fairest, most balanced, and modern trade agreement ever achieved.  There’s never been anything like it.  Other countries are now looking at it, but there can’t be a border like that because, believe it or not, that is by far the biggest border anywhere in the world, in terms of economy, in terms of people.  There’s nothing even close.“*

*For the first time in American history, we have replaced a disastrous trade deal that rewarded outsourcing with a truly fair and reciprocal trade deal that will keep jobs, wealth, and growth right here in America. And, in a true sense, it’s also a partnership with Mexico and Canada and ourselves against the world.  It’s really a trade partnership, if you look at it that way.  And it’s a day of great celebration in all three countries.“*

Honestly, the time has come for Canada to transition away from the economies of the 1970s. Drop the tariffs on Chinese vehicles and push for assembly in Canada.

In the meantime focus our economy on tech services, power from hydro, and nuclear/fusion, and see if we can’t score chip foundries, drone and aerospace manufacturing.

  9. Wonder how Doug Ford feels about this since he wanted Carney to maintain the 100% chinese EV tariff. He’s said that Ontario has been heavily relying on CUSMA for the Ontario auto sector, but if Trump is willing to spit on CUSMA again and again, why is Doug Ford opening his mouth waiting for trump’s spit.

There’s no such thing as cars „Made in Canada“ or „Made in USA“ or „Made in Mexico“.

The supply chains of cars manufacturing is so integrated that your car will be made of sub-assemblies of parts made throughout North American and even beyond.

Seems like someone is really desperate because he spends a lot of time to distract from the domestic problems in its own country.

  11. How’s the lack of tourism going for ya there, bud? Ask the distilleries in Kentucky how much they don’t need Canada. Or hey, what about NY state border towns, or Washington towns?

But sure chief, you keep telling yourself you don’t need us.

  12. Ontario, Michigan and Ohio have their own auto manufacturing trade economy. All the car plants in those areas depend on trade with each other. This is going to take a lot to undo and it’s going to cost a lot of money. Guess who will pay for that?
