    4. I was a technician for Staples for many years and data wipes of returned products are an important part of the return process. This is especially since Microsoft Windows (and most devices) pretty much require an account and we can’t even get into the computer if we don’t have the username/password information (this alone makes me wonder how this issue even happened? How do you sell a computer that is locked to someone else’s account?). The customer doesn’t get the product returned until we get into the computer and start the Windows factory reset process. In any case, these stores are idiots and not following procedure if they allowed this to happen.

      When dealing with businesses just keep it simple. Is the cost of non-compliance enough to force compliance.

      In this case, what sort of fines does Staples face or is an administrative slap on the wrist? Unless the cost on of noncompliance hurts their bottom line, they’ll ignore you.

      There are some laptops can’t be wiped or reset normally. Even if you reinstall Windows, the laptop will reconnect to the company and lock itself again.

      This is because the device is still registered in Microsoft’s business system (Azure/Intune). The lock is stored online, not on the laptop.

      Only the original company can remove it. If they don’t, the laptop is basically unusable.

      We ran into the same issue with Dell as well. They asked for a return and gave us refunds and that’s it. :/
