A Carnegie Mellon University-led team is developing a functional 3D bioprinted liver for transplant.

The project, titled Liver Immunocompetent Volumetric Engineering (LIVE), aims to address the shortage of donor organs by developing bioengineered tissue to treat acute liver failure.

Specifically, the project seeks to develop a temporary liver that buys time for the patient’s own organ to heal, ultimately bypassing the need for a full transplant.

On January 12, the university announced it had secured $28.5 million in funding from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) in the US.
