Range extended vehicles are an better option than a PHEV. You eliminate the range issue, and get to reap the effiencies of running a smaller ICE in pure generator mode. It has an all electric powertrain which keeps things simpler. Also helps them gain WV drivetrain experience. It’s basically a PHEV but implemented in a superior way for most people who just want to go A to B. So long as the generator is enough to charge the battery even at high load conditions, there really is no downside.

What remains for PHEV in my opinion is performance oriented vehicles where the small battery is useful for crusing in the city and the light commute, but you still have a full ICE for the petrolhead for more sported driving or tracking. Until batteries get light enough, this will remain a key segment. Biofuels and hybrids may best this out on industrial policy grounds though, and you cannot have the PHEV battery be too large and heavy.

We need to change our regulations to be more friendly to EVs and more affordable, smaller vehicles like the Europeans. This is unsustainable.
