Rep. Dominicana is a cool find, I never thought of the capital’s name as related to its name

  2. Not capitals but countries with the cognate of one their cities: Portugal – Porto, Morocco – Marrakesh

  3. Now, for each country, which came first, the country name or the capital name?

(Here in Brazil I know the country name came first)

Surprisingly, the official name of Paraguay’s capital Asunción in Guaraní is *Paraguay*, so there’s that too.

The official Spanish name is *Asunción del Paraguay*, which maybe also kind of counts, but most people shorten it to just *Asunción*. Pretty much the same thing happens with Chile’s capital, formally *Santiago de Chile* but most commonly known as just *Santiago*.

Also, many Arabic speakers use the name of their country to refer to the capital, most notably Egyptians who may use *Maṣr* (the Arabic name for ‚Egypt‘) for Cairo, even though the city is formally known as *al-Qāhirah* (‚The Cairo‘).

(Of course, none of those names are commonly used in English, so the don’t really apply for this map)

  5. Not the capital, but one of the suburbs of Ottawa is Kanata, which is derived from the same word as Canada. (Village/Settlement)
