No laws against incest in NJ. Now the recurring incest themes in Boardwalk Empire and The Sopranos make sense. Very allegorical.

God damnit New Jersey, Alabama is supposed to be the stereotype for incest, not you.

Look at Texas subverting all of that freedom not allowing you to fuck your aunts or uncles. Do better.

  4. I know this is in the news recently because apparently Muslims only marry their cousin and Muslims bad rah rah rah. But people forget how common marrying your cousin was only a few generations ago. For example both Einstein and fdr married their cousins

  5. You can tell Kentucky let the “fuck your sister” jokes get under their skin and made a point

These laws are usually reversed. The places with more strict laws usually create the laws because it’s a problem. While the places where it is uncommon don’t feel the need to create the laws because it doesn’t really happen.

Usually the more strict it is, the more it was happening.

Maine is especially disturbing because that’s where I first encountered the concept of a technical virgin.

Ohio sucks but if we could stop being lumped in as a „Northern Alabama“ now that’d be great thaaaaanks

I interpret this map as “did states need to put a restrictive law on the books for this” so the way I see NJ is that they never had an incest problem while WY, WA and OR all did big time.

  11. Alabama mass migration to New Jersey? I did not have that one on my 2026 bingo card

I like how Virginia had to specify some rules regarding double cousins. A relatively rare occurrence.

I do love the southern incest jokes when the only two states who have literally no laws against it are in the northeast.

All that talk about Ohio being weird and here they have the strictest laws on it

  15. As a practical matter, how do states prevent/detect marriages that are inconsistent with state law?

Based on the first map, why aren’t we making fun of New Jersey and Rhode Island instead of Alabama?

  17. Pretty funny that people up north make fun of the “inbred southerners” meanwhile the laws look pretty much the same.
