      and in the case of South Africa and Sudan, their smallest subdivisions (Gauteng and Khartoum respectively) is their *most* populous

      Arguably Greenland should be on this list.

      The Northeast Greenland National Park is the largest subdivision, but is unincorporated because it has zero permanent population.

      Alaska should be on this list too. 1.7m km2 with a population around 740,000

      If you don’t count Gilgit Baltistan as a province of Pakistan (it technically is not) then Balochistan should also be here.

      It’s interesting that the only region with access to the Caspian sea is the least populated in Turkmenistan

      Not a country, but in Michigan, the upper peninsula represents 1/3 of the land and only 1% of the population.

      There really should be waaay more countries than these. Take for example Egypt with its New Valley governonate, a ~450,000 km² vast area with only a pop. of a quarter million. Sits comfortably behind Nunavut as second most sparsely populated region in this list.

      Belgium kinda. The capital is its own region and is by far the smallest in absolute numbers. But disregarding this special region, Belgium has 2 main regions and Wallonia is the largest and least populated of the two.

      Also Pakistan (balochistan) 1.2 million while more than half of the land total is 220 million

      I this its the sharpest difference
