It reads less like political point scoring and more like acknowledging something that’s hard to stay silent on.

Notice how most people who support Gaza are dead silent on supporting overturning the Iranian oppressive government.

So, exercise restraint is him speaking out. He either supports this regime or is afraid of them. Whichever it is, it’s not good for the UK.

    4. Hang on, boots on the ground in Ukraine but a dictator government murdering people and he’s chill about it? Come off it have a spine threaten them.

Boring. How often have we had the „Iran cracks down – Europe condemns“ song and dance?

Hate him or love him, with Trump Iranian protesters have actual firepower in their corner for the first time ever now. And judging by the relatively meek response in relation to how huge the protests are, his threats are actually working.

Britain and Europe can either put their money up as well or should just remain quiet, stop embarrassing themselves and accept another step into irrelevance.

The UK shouldn’t really comment on this one.

We completely screwed over Iran’s chance at democracy back in 1953. A lot of Iranians still hate us because of it.

      > On 19 August 1953, (Democratically elected) Prime Minister of Iran Mohammad Mosaddegh was overthrown in a coup d’état orchestrated by the United States (CIA) and the United Kingdom (MI6). A key motive was to protect British oil interests in Iran after Mossadegh nationalized and refused to concede to western oil demands.[5][6][7] It was instigated by the United States (under the name TP-AJAX Project[8] or Operation Ajax) and the United Kingdom (under the name Operation Boot)

It’s clear that a lot of Western involvement isn’t really about protecting protestors. It’s an opportunity to topple a regime we don’t like.

We should stay completely out of Iran’s business and Iran should stay out of ours.

This whole lecturing Iran on what they should or shouldn’t do makes us either look like hypocrites or stupid for not knowing our own history.

    7. And yet, somehow, he remains silent on the exact same fucking thing in Palestine, Israel and the US.

How about you just openly support a people struggling for freedom against a totalitarian, Islamist regime?

This should be one of the few moments where Starmer can kick into gear. Iran has already sent its gunners in to mow down dozens of unarmed protestors with guns, and here we are, sitting on the sidelines.

I’m totally okay with a tactical silence where we hint at what we want but wait to see how America and Israel act, that’s their neck of the woods. But this just comes across as pathetic and cowardly while hundreds of thousands of Iranian women are rising up to overthrow their Islamist dictator regime.

      >In a joint statement with the leaders of France and Germany, the Prime Minister said he was “deeply concerned about reports of violence by Iranian security forces” and “strongly” condemned the killing of protesters.

      >The leaders added: “The Iranian authorities have the responsibility to protect their own population and must allow for the freedom of expression and peaceful assembly without fear of reprisal.

      >“We urge the Iranian authorities to exercise restraint, to refrain from violence, and to uphold the fundamental rights of Iran’s citizens.”

They either have no fucking clue what’s going on, or they’re hoping nobody else does, or they’re just being total chickens, again hoping that America and Israel will just do the heavy lifting for us, presumably so we can blame them for any mistakes made and emerge totally useless but morally pure.

The more I see upheaval and dystopian leaders/plans that they have, the more that I see backlash against it. This is going to happen a lot more, as people aren’t having the blade runner style world that thr super rich want to happen.
