SS: Leaders from major European powers expressed support for Denmark and Greenland on Tuesday in a joint statement, saying the Arctic island belongs to its people, following renewed interest by U.S. President Donald Trump in taking over the Danish territory.
„Greenland belongs to its people. It is for Denmark and Greenland, and them only, to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland,“ said the statement by leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Britain, and Denmark.
European leaders ought to make a formal complaint against US aspirations on Denmark and travel to the US and speak directly to Congress to ask for legislation that clarifies US treaty obligations with regard to Denmark. Congress loves to duck hard questions, but the media couldn’t ignore European heads of state who insisted on making an issue of something. The American people have little to no interest in seizing Greenland, so it may be possible to force the administration to back off.
Europe still has room for manouver but the politicians must understand that violence is now on the table and act accordingly.
If I was a European politician, I’d be be making a contingency plan on taking US troops in Europe hostage if the US moves for Greenland. Then start moving some forces closer to a US base and maybe leak it to the press.
The other obvious thing to do is to start talking directly to Putin. The Americans are not giving any money to Ukraine anymore, so it’s time to cut them off these negotiations (which haven’t produced any meaningful results anyway).
