      Over 50s who don’t own their own house and are without the funds to do so risk being a massive problem for the government in future. The government needs to build more council housing now otherwise more problems will just be stored up for the future.

      No cos Reddit told me all the old people are selfishly sat on vast hoards of wealth like fucking Smaug from the Hobbit. How can they simultaneously have all the money and also none of the money? It’s almost like that’s another bullshit narrative designed to distract from the actual issue which is that capitalism has finalised to the point where all the assets and wealth (that we don’t tax) belong to too few people and there’s nothing left for the rest of us.

      Tax the rich or just get used to all the homeless being very old people.

      And the older people suddenly becoming homeless and then coming in to my work are very angry about being treated like homeless people, who they believe they are better than.

      Clearly should have planned better for retirement, like the current crop of 40 and 50 year olds are expected to.

      We need to build more OAP housing anyway because of demographic changes. Make it mixed housing tenures: private sale, affordable rent etc and it will be self funding.

      At least they had an opportunity to buy a house when they were cheap millennials and younger are going to face the same future never having had a chance to own at all.

      These lot are going to have to in the same world that younger people live in – hope that we build enough housing to make rent affordable for all.

      More of all of us are at risk from homelessness, that doesn’t mean that pensioners in general aren’t doing better than other groups.

      As always, the solution is better housing availability generally and more social homes so that the state can still provide some kind of safety net for more of those who still miss out.

      Growing the UK economy is one sure bet way of lifting all boats. A stagnating or shrinking economy will be challenging to any government however well intentioned.

      I really really like it when I go on rightmove and find an affordable house in a nice area, close to amenities and the station, that extra bathroom – even a utility! Nice! Only to read the description and see you had to be born before England won the World Cup to buy.

      That’s my favourite thing in the world. And looks like it’ll continue for many a year to come.

      I tell all my friends you simply have to own a home no matter how small or shit cos otherwise you are fucked when we get to our retirement (if we even can retire)

      This is only going to get worse…eventually effecting those that do own their own homes.

      Isn’t this significantly less than the proportion in the population at large?

      Cynically though, I wonder if the housing crisis actually starting to affect old people might be what makes the government actually give a shit. Though I suspect the solution will either be „increase the amount of money we give to old people“ or „reserve housing for old people only“ rather than anything that benefits anyone else.

      Minimal sympathy and that goes towards those who truly couldn’t help being in the situation they’re in right now.

      They predominantly vote for the policies that have put us in the mess. They benefited from social housing and the right to buy.

      If they decided to take the equity out of their homes to go on lavish holidays, that’s on them.

      My uncle falls into this bracket, I’m so worried for him, he currently earns 60k a year but owns nothing and pays central London rent, and once he can’t work ( physical work and he is 64 years old) he won’t be able to afford the rent, I have no idea what we will do.

      Homelessness is an essential component of capitalism.

      From instilling fear, to maintaining house prices, there is no political motivation to house those in need.
