Looks legit. I know Cypriots who buy meals or big amounts of food and throw away half of it because they don’t need or want to consume more, instead of buying less.
Any τα μακαρόνια του φούρνου ? Can’t get enough of that.
As far as I know from cypriot friends, it’s impolite to serve food in ‚just enough‘ amounts. You need to overserve food to guests to show generosity.
Which obviously leads to waste.
I admit my guilt. In the summer, before you can even blink an eye, fruit goes bad.
100% u guys dont finish your plate
Most EU countries suffered in tge world wars with a lot of food shortage, learning to eat and use what they have and not throwing it away
Does the leftover bread that I sprinkle into the ground for the birds to eat classify as a waste? Asking for my younger self.
It’s true
Absolutely true. I was in Friday’s the other day and I saw with my own eyes how big the portions were and how much food was just left at tables.
It’s a mixture of reasons – most of the food is thrown away at supermarkets – more urban areas are in advantage because supermarkets are run more effective there (more restocking during the day, much faster circulation)
Reliable electricity is another point, of course culture and kind of fud served (unfrozen seafood has a large spoil rate) and of course single/family households but I imagine what’s thrown away private isn’t measured anyway because there is no easy way to measure that.
Denmark and Spain are regional outliers would be interesting what’s the reason there Cyprus it’s not that surprising as a touristy Island I imagine similar numbers for other Greek islands.
