Even in a thousand years Turkey will never allow Cyprus to join NATO
P.s
>Some diplomats in NATO and the EU are worried that the Cypriot presidency will exacerbate long-standing tensions with Turkey, at a time when the EU is seeking to beef up its defenses and is aiming for closer military cooperation with Ankara.
I don’t care about what NATO thinks but for the EU having a candidate member being actively occupied and constantly bullied and acting like us trying to fight back is an inconvenience to them is so fucking insulting.
P.s2 Erdogan has proven time and time again how unreliable he is and manipulative but sure EU, try to cozy up to him, I am sure the nth time you try things will surely go great!
It would be nice to start having a healthy relationship between Cyprus-Turkey and genuinely leave the past behind. Though I’m not hopeful considering how turkey has never shown any willingness in developing relations with Cyprus. Let alone a good number of tcs are so obsessed with eoka and the past they prbly think in their mind that eoka is the government now in cyprus
The thing is even Turkey and Cyprus resolve every single dispute, therr still won’t be any progress on Eu-Turkey relations because if not Cyprus than France will block what Greece and Cyprus unblocked. This is a great and sensible offer from the Cypriot president but is eventually meaningless.
Cypriots generally don’t like NATO. My source: Fuck NATO. They are mainly the reason we are like this, a never ending conflict. Yes we are the People who caused the wound but NATO made sure to cauterise the wound as to never let it heal. Leftists and people from the right I have spoken to never speak well for NATO. Even some polls done for European countries a few years back had us as the European country with the highest percentage of animosity against NATO as an organisation.
From what I can tell from Turkish media, the Cyprus issue doesn’t really seem to be treated as an issue for some time.
Most of the attention is focused on topics that are seen as more urgent or important, such as the Kurdish issue, Apo, and the PKK. Cyprus rarely comes up, and when it does, it feels more like background noise than an active political problem.
Also, one way or another, Turkey did not strongly oppose Cyprus joining the EU. As for NATO, membership might still be discussed behind closed door (if it is benefitial for us in another discussion). And honestly, it seems clear that NATO cannot accept a country with territorial disputes or occupation — Ukraine is a very obvious example.
Sorry to say this but it feels like the Cyprus “problem” has slowly faded from Turkey’s main agenda.
Can we stop sucking up to USA, the same country that threatens EU and wants it abolished? Why is our strategy to suck up to that country after other EU countries want to distance from it
