    1. People from Iceland were abducted and sold as slaves in what is now Morocco? You learn something new everyday.

Looking at the lines contained inside the Ottoman Empire, is the Devshirme system being counted as part of the Ottoman slave trade here? Because if it is, it’s a weird choice; it would have been better if it was its own color, if not subtracted from a map of slave trade routes.

While you could definitely call the kidnapped people slaves (the Ottoman sultan definitely called them ‚kapıkulu‘), I would say it doesn’t really fulfill the ‚trade‘ part of ’slave trade‘.

you know already that liberal Americans are going to get this post banned don’t you.

„you cant be white and Slav… I mean enslaved“.

    4. Expand Barbary influence. They were raiding Adriatic and modern Greece shores too.

    5. These numbers seem very shaky, considering how small the Slavic genetic heritage in Turkey is (and much of it comes from Balkan War immigrants). Millions of people should have left a much larger genetic legacy.

And for those who will say „Turks were castrating slaves“, the maximum number of castrated slaves in the Ottoman Empire was 800. If we count the ones used by the Mamluks, there were not even 2000. And especially in Egypt, the majority of them were African blacks.

Many european nation would abuse the slave trade. The french allied with the ottoman and helped them in there raid against Italian villages. British allied with the berber pirates in order to bankrupt the Italian city state trade monopoly.

    7. Once again, to reiterate older comments of mine

“op is a regular poster (karma/engagement farmer) of disinformation/misinformation or just straight up propaganda in this and many other subs. (A lot of it being Russian propaganda, or just pro Russian and/or anti American)

They also tend to use very suspicious, out of date, false, manipulated, and/or misleading maps and sources for said maps.

For the purpose of engagement/karma farming, and spreading disinformation, misinformation, distrust, division, etc in targeted groups against targeted groups.

As I say every time I catch one of their posts, report both the account and post for spam and/or violating the subs and websites guidelines”

    8. I can’t say anything about this map’s dates, but the old biography of Peter the Great on the family bookshelf when I was growing up made passing reference to it being a generally accepted number that 60,000 slaves per year were going out of Eastern Europe by the 1670s. Typically attributed to Tartar vs. cossack raids.

It is no coincidence that Slav and slave sound similar, our word slave comes from the Latin word for the Slavs, because so many Slavs were used as slaves in the middle ages.

Interesting you specially name the Barbary Slave trade in your title despite it being the lowest slave-trade system referenced in your picture

Russia ended the Crimean slave trade and was one of the main responsible for the suppression of slavery in the Ottoman Empire

France ended the Barbary and Moroccan slave trade

Britain ended the Atlantic slave trade – the biggest ever

What all have in common? None of them was ended by a Muslim country of realm…

How about the Maltese slave trade? After the island was taken by the Christians and they slaughtered all the Muslims on it, the surviving Christians decided to get in on it and started kidnapping and enslaving Muslims to sell to other Christians. Still a European slave network, but in the reverse direction.
