This is an utterly shameful sell out by the Americans.
That’s insane. Unjustly rewards Russian aggression. An incentive, in fact.
It almost looks like the requests Putin made to Trump last time they met were better than the proposed „peace“ plan.
In any case, I truly hope this realpolitik event teaches my generation about how useless armed conflicts are. So many needless deaths.
Trump is a traitor, but Europe was weak for way too long. I blame French, Germans and „Brussels“ for this outcone. They were focusing on post colonialism of new EU members too much, wasting focus on some green shit and attacking Poland.
So the demilitarized zone becomes bonus Russia when? 60 days. Putin will want to do this (at least) while Trump is still pres.
Now would be a good time for the EU to grow a backbone.
I want Ukraine to push out the invading force. The hard reality is that Ukrainian offensives haven’t lasted. Russian offensives are slow, but the they are gaining territory.
A deal like this is closed when everyone isn’t happy.
I can see them making these territorial concessions, if they’re allowed to join NATO as a security guarantee.
Realistically, the territory in Donetsk is lost already with the breakthrough at Pokrovsk.
That whole capitulation plan (Cause its not a peace plan) is ridiculious. The russians commited so many war crimes and they want everyone to be absolved from that, all those rapes, the executions of POWs, torturing of civilians, the human safari (where they find civilians and kill them with drones, just for laughs), the bombing of kindergartens and hospitals… they want all of it to go unpunished. They want Ukraine to give up (unconquered) land AND for them to make their army tiny, so russia can gear up and start all over again when they replenish their army. It is bizarre, Trump’s plan is Putin’s plan. It is absurd and shameful that Witkoff, Trump’s golfing buddy, even proposed this with a straight face.
I’ll give it 3 years tops before Russia invades again.

What do Ukrainians think? In the past, they haven’t been interested in conceding the territory seized by Putin but maybe that’s changed?
Never been more ashamed to be European. We’re just standing there and letting it happen. Just like in 1938/39, and in the 1990s. We don’t do shit and wait until America sorts things out.

All of the comments saying the US is at fault for this proposed plan meanwhile the EU sits on their hands and will probably roll over if this peace went through with some big talk and then nothing. The stance of the US has not changed since the war broke out we were going to provide weapons and loans and not going to get involved directly with Putin, if nobody wants to get in the mud and help Ukraine with direct military support, this is the outcome. Russia is not going to give up the land it occupied unless it is forced to Trump is taking the low road and basically saying any peace is good enough while most Americans would not agree, this is what is on the table. The inaction of all Western countries before the war and Europe now is the problem not what ever donald trump is cooking up in his diet coke addled brain.

Land is not the biggest problem. They want Ukaine to have only 300 000 of army and no long range weapons. Also any provocation would be counted like end of peace.

My understanding of the average Ukrainian person’s opinion is that they’ll willing to at least somewhat cede land IF security guarantees are given. This gives 0 security guarantees and basically furthers Russian aggression by shrinking the Ukrainian army for no reason. Since people have pointed out that Hungary would likely block a Ukrainian attempt to join NATO, joining the EU would probably be a decent alternative (and tbh Ukraine has historically had more support to join EU than NATO) which should hopefully dissuade Russia and give a longer peace.
Russia is being punished by getting everything he wanted.

Ukraine would be forced to sacrifice hundreds of thousands of citizens, give up its most fortified defense installations, reduce the army by half, give up crucial weapons systems and production lines and Putin would get rid of the sanctions could rearm and then take the rest of the country. The peace plan would inevitably lead to Moscow taking Kyiv…
Seeing a lot of people hating on this. I can’t say I’d be a fan of it from a Ukranian perspective, but I’d like to pose a question.
What else is to be done, reasonably? Europe isn’t going to go to war with Russia, neither is the US. Ukraine is running out of troops and is losing the ability to repel the invaders.
What else, short of sparking a much bigger conflict, is to be done?
Putin will still keep attacking even if this gets agreed to….
