Constantinople in Greek and Roman hands was the most civilised and advanced place in the world….today its decadence makes me sad. I have abandoned though maximalist ideas, it’s Turkish and named Istanbul nowadays.

Honestly you can’t really get a realistic comparison due to each city having drastically different definitions used in defining their metropolitan area..

    3. Bullshit. At a point, Cordoba during certain part of the islamic rule of Spain was the biggest city in the world on 10th century

    4. Wasn’t Napoli Europes largest city throughout most of the early modern period?

    5. Largest by what metric? And what’s with the rounded dates? Where’s the source for this?

This certainly bolsters Moscow’s claim to being the Third — erm — Fifth Rome!

Istanbul is bigger than Barad-Dûr or any Ruzzian shithole. Also, the placement of Paris on the map is too far to the east and north.

It should include cordoba around the year 1000.

I know the [list in wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_urban_community_sizes) says it only had 110k people but that’s an **extremely** conservative estimate. Basically as low as they get.

The population of the city was more likely between 300k and 400k which would have made it the largest city in europe by far. And one of the largest in the world, up there with angkor and kaifeng.

I moved to Moscow from Tyumen and after some time found it to be not terribly big. I live on MKAD and It takes me just 1,5h on a bike to arrive to my university in the centre. Maybe it will take even less if I use roadways instead of pavements.

If I’m not mistaken (according to an arte-documentation), Amsterdam should also be on this list.
(maybe it was just the richest city for some time though)
