I don’t believe the southern edge of this region could be so perfectly aligned with the Russian-Kazakh border. Unless that was a deliberate drawing by the Soviet Communist Party.

Fun Fact of the Day: In addition to these naturally occurring black soils, humans have been making them for centuries. Most famous is the Amazonian dark earth, commonly known as terra preta, of South America.

Northern Kazakhstan has the same soil types too, they don’t end at the border. Actually black soil is the reason why so many Russians and other European nationalities live in northern Kazakhstan: mass migrations during Soviet times to cultivate this „new land“. Local Kazakh workforce was not numerius enough for this huge project, and also, Kazakhs traditionally were nomads and many of them lacked skills of sedentary agriculture (it changed later, nowadays almost all Kazakhs live in cities and towns).

I always thought EU CAP + Ukrainian black soil would give food security for Europe nearly indefinitely, which would be great news for my country as we’ve relied on food imports for several centuries.
My country deciding to suicidally leave the EU, Russia helping itself to a large chunk of Ukraine’s black soil areas, and the impact that would be had on other EU farmers have scuppered that dream somewhat.

Not only in Eurasia…
Why didn’t you post the map that shows Chernozem soil is also present in large amounts in North America?
