A thread on some of the funniest stuff:

„The Romans regard themselves first above all
others: therefore, in this work of eradication or extirpation, we
should rightly give them precedence, declaring that no reference should be made to them in any discussion of linguistic excellence.
We therefore affirm that the language
of the Romans (not language, indeed, but rather squalid speech) is the ugliest
of the Italian languages – which is not surprising, because even in their ugly manners and appearances, the Romans appear more lurid than all other peoples.“

Well, as someone from Bologna, totally NOT biased by the fact that we’re the only ones he didn’t roast, I still don’t see anything wrong with what he wrote even today!

Though I kinda suspect that good old Dante, having studied here at the University while being extremely frustrated that dear Beatrice wouldn’t give him any kind of „satisfaction“, he found here plenty of… let’s say extra-linguistic reasons to appreciate Bologna.

    3. Friuli Venezia-Giulia (barely) mentioned 🔥🔥🔥🔥💜💜💜💜💜🤑🤑🤑🤑

Bruh holy fuck that’s hysterical. 800 years later and its totally unchanged.

As a fellow Tuscan who’s middle name is Dante… I adore this mans wisdom.

    5. >venetians: women sound like men
      >romagnans: men sound like women

Why is it still true ffs

    6. I am laughing at how unhinged of a rant he actually bothered to go on. How petty and wronged he must’ve been by the various people in the regions he distastes with so much vitriol. It’s hilarious astounding.

Che odioso odiatore che era, gli bruciava ancora il culo per l’esilio da firenze hahaha

I think you’ve extended Romagna a touch too far west north — Dante groups Ferrara and Imola together with Bologna, Modena, and Reggio fairly consistently when talking about their shared linguistic traits.

      >*Dicimus ergo quod forte non male opinantur, qui Bononienses asserunt pulchriori locutione loquentes, cum ab Imolensibus, Ferrariensibus, et Mutinensibus circumstantibus aliquid proprio Vulgari adsciscunt*
      *[…]*
*Hanc ex commixtione advenarum Longobardorum terrigenis credimus remansisse; et hæc est causa, quare Ferrariensium, Mutinensium, vel Regianorum nullum invenimus poetasse.*

Also I’m fairly sure that the Romagna color is actually covering Bologna itself in this map.

      >Italy is a whorehouse, whose inhabitants kill each other constantly, imperial correction is needed

Oh, that’s just what things were like in the Renaissance, you know how it is.

    9. Haha, Dante’s got Italy’s drama mapped out perfectly—love the regional shade!

I laugh with my ancestors at „proud leaders that act like plebs“ 😆

    11. My family is from Ancona, which seems to be lumped in with Roma (Papal States, I guess.) but I don’t think my rural peasant ancestors would have sounded anything like urban, fast-talking Romans.

    12. as a Venetian myself, I can confirm I am still not sure whether my exes were men or women (but that’s how we like it over here, that’s just how progressive we are)

I love this so much, we really have always hated each other from the start.
