Dude, you work in a prison in Massachusetts… you are set.
Not saying their prisons work and make people better but everybody employed to contain them are nicely taken care of. Best Dental you can get!!!

How do expenses correlate with local cost of living, with outcomes like recidivism, and with quality of life for the prisoners? What does MA get for being an order of magnitude more expensive per prisoner than AR?

I’d hate to see what prisoners are eating in The South

Insanity. They could pay criminals 1% of these numbers to stay out of prison

Louisiana is so cheap because over 1 percent of the entire state in jail. Costs get lower when you have the highest incarceration rate for a state in one of the highest incarceration rate in a country

Prison guards union in California is still strong despite the state trying to weaken them. And it’s a high cost of living state even considering some of the out of the way places we have prisons.

Y’know, if we invested half this money into poor communities, education and mental health centers I bet we could prevent most of these criminals from being criminals in the first place, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, if you can even call this a cure.

Seems like a two-fold problem. States with severe poverty have high incarceration rates, and the massive amount of inmates strains their already struggling budget. Cycle of despair

China has fewer prisoners than the US despite having over 4 times as many people.

Just go full Lord of the Flies and strand people on an island.
You can airdrop supplies once a week.
Turn that 60k into 3.

Wait this is insane. I take care of a family of 4 for less than it costs to house a prisoner in a concrete block with terrible food, and very few niceties. Crazy how much grift there obviously is.

Starting salary for a correctional officer in California is 60k per year and easily goes past 100k
We are spending more to incarcerate these folks than they make per year out in the real world ….

Good old California, treat the good citizens like criminals and slap the criminals hand. Here I am taking care of kids after a spouse’s death, living on 40K and some gangbanger is living on 130K of taxpayers money.

So in Maine it costs $307k per prisoner per year? Now compare that to the cost of living outside of jail. How is it that the prison system is taking so much of our money?
