Die Regierung von Zypern kritisiert sich, nachdem sie die Gemeinden angewiesen hat, Graffiti und Slogans zu entfernen, die den Krieg im Gaza kritisieren und sie als Hassrede bezeichnen. Das Rundschreiben, das vom Innenministerium am 11. September 2025 gesendet wurde, folgte einer Anfrage des Israels Minister für Diaspora, solche Botschaften zu beseitigen.
Der Schritt hat Empörung ausgelöst, und Kritiker sagten, dass die Gleichstellung von Anti-Gaza-Kriegslogans mit Hassreden die militärischen Aktionen Israels effektiv unterstützt. Der Generalsekretär von Akel, Stefanos Stefanou, sagte: „Die Verurteilung von Gräueltaten im Gaza ist keine Hassrede. Wenn Stimmen, die Solidarität mit den Unterdrückten ausdrücken, zum Schweigen gebracht werden, verlieren wir alle.“
Lokale Beamte haben ebenfalls zurückgeschoben. Andreas Vyras, Präsident der Union der Gemeinden, sagte, die Gemeinden entgegennehmen keine Anordnungen von ausländischen Regierungen. „Wir nehmen keine Anweisungen von ausländischen Regierungen“, sagte er. Vyras fügte hinzu, dass die lokalen Behörden bereits eingehen, wenn Slogans wirklich Gewalt anregen und betonten, dass die Meinungsfreiheit ein Kernprinzip ist.
Der Streit hat die politischen Spannungen erhöht. Disy, die regierende Partei, kritisierte Akel für ideologische Vorurteile, während Akel der Regierung beschuldigte, eine „Marionette“ für Israel zu werden und die Souveränität von Zypern nicht zu verteidigen.
Innenminister Konstantinos Ioannou verteidigte das Rundschreiben und sagte, es sei eine routinemäßige Erinnerung an bestehende Gesetze und er habe den kommunalen Führern seinen Zweck erklärt. Dennoch sprechen viele Zyprioten weiterhin Bedenken, dass die Handlungen der Regierung den legitimen Protest gegen den Gaza -Konflikt zum Schweigen bringen können.

Fully agree. Spray painting slogans on government and private property is a plague in our country and in the Mediterranean. I welcome art on walls but not this garbage. Same with football slogans extreme right and extreme left as well. Spray your own house then.
Can we at least keep our freedom and of speech on the island.
Like I said a few days ago when there was a post here showing the list of countries who have condemned the war in Gaza and our country wasn’t on the list, our dumbass, stupid, dumbfuck president is literally licking BB’s balls every day and its disgusting. Shame on him. I can’t wait till the elections so we can vote him out. He will lose over this because people actually care about the genocide happening in Gaza, and he will lose a lot of votes over his support for Israel. He puts money and profits over human lives and I’m sure people are sick of it.

There’s so much graffiti all over Cyprus, why only focus on this? I wouldn’t mind if they ordered the removal of all graffiti, even though this is really the concern for the municipalities not the government. But only focusing on Gaza related graffiti is very telling, and will probably just lead to more anyways
I mean… what did the graffiti actually say? There’s a difference between „Free Palestine“ and „Death to the IDF“ (both of which I’ve seen stencilled on walls).

I dislike ugly/political graffiti but targeting only one kind of it and labeling it as hate speech (when it is not) is a whole other problem. At the request of a foreign government nonetheless.
