I have no clue if this was a valid case or not, but there are a LOT of people who should never have been parents.

Children are removed from their parents all the time and placed into foster care. It’s unfortunate, but it is just a fact that it happens.
This article is very light on details and doesn’t tell us why the child was removed, but we can at least infer that the mother is well known by the authorities for a reason.
The outrage here is that a danish test has been ruled unfit for use with Greenlandic parents because of cultural differences, but was applied here anyway because the mother was deemed danish enough. An assessment that we here can’t really evaluate.

Good to know one of their plans to abduct children from poor or minority groups, such a great excuse this general „parenting competence“ test
Whatspeakstome on
What the fuck is a parenting competency test? How can you possibly determine whether a mother will be a good mother before the baby is born and then have this authoritarian power to completely restrict a mother from her newborn.
The news is vague and maybe this mother has done some illegal or dangerous things to end up in her situation but there is just not enough information. There should have been more care to help guide her through this new experience if she’s been deemed incompetent. What the fuck is wrong with the world.

If you want to increase your chances of keeping your child before it is born then give birth literally anywhere other than Greenland

Sounds like this is a very baity headline and I am sure there is more to it. But why tf don’t the Danes let go of Greenland and let it to the natives. They have no business there.

There’s a lot more detail in the article about the other case (its linked in this article). The “parenting competency tests” are quite clearly culturally bound to the point of being blatantly racist.
Some examples would be IQ type questions including “what is glass made of?” and “what are the big steps in Rome?” Nothing to do with parenting ability, just check on whether you’ve got a western-style high school education. (Maybe even specifically Euro? As an Aussie who’s not into architecture, I have no shame about not knowing the answer to the Rome question … I do know some random facts about Aussie buildings through cultural osmosis, but we don’t talk much about Italian buildings.)
Another example was a psych monitoring the mother (the mother from the other case) with a doll. Checking for eye contact, appropriate behaviour etc. At first glance this sounds a little more valid than the IQ questions, but who can act normal playing with a doll as an adult, while knowing that someone is watching and judging you? I’m not sure if I’d freeze up and get judged as cold or get nervous, overact and be seen as crazy. At best I’d be awkward as hell.
And in the case I’m talking about, the mother hasn’t even had any dolls as a child. I at least had a Barbie. (Actually now I think about it, Barbie ended up with her hair cut off and her face painted bright red with makeup. Drawing on previous experience with dolls may not be the right move either, lol.)

So the municipality is Høje-Taastrup, so we’re likely not talking a greenlandic in Greenland, but a danish citizen living in Denmark.

In America, DCFS can remove your child if you are shitty enough as a parent.
But this is… pre-emptively removing her child… it’s like there’s no path forward for her to re-unite with her family. And this as a whole is another layer of trauma from the state, which no matter what WILL affect her parenting as well. It’s cruel.
Impressive-Safe2545 on
If the law has been determined to be legally inapplicable to people with a Greenland background, I don’t see how anyone can claim it is a “parenting” test. It’s a cultural test.

I think there’s maybe more to this story. Is she raising that child alone, is she prepared to raise that child (did she take parenting classes for exemple) does she have drugs or alcohol problems, mental issues.. Did she ask and got help for her trauma. Has there been intergenerational abuses?
Social services can’t divulges what’s really going on for privacy reasons, so the story we get is from the part of the Mom.
Makes me think of this young woman that I met when I was studying Nursing. She was maybe 18-19 and she was coming in to give birth. She already had a big file from Social services. Her Mom and Grandmother were also (sadly) well known by them too. Do you let her go home totally unprepared with a newborn? Especially if she lives with her abusive Mom? And give a chance to the abusive Grandma to babysit ?
Maybe the Government is wrong too? Maybe they are racist? But we really need to wait for the whole story.

This reminded me of a Hindi movie named Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway. It’s based on a true story of a mother’s fight to regain custody of her children from the authorities.

An interesting sidenote to this story is, that a new parenthood competency test was in development – one that would account for the cultural differences for Greenlandic mothers in a Danish setting [https://www.dr.dk/nyheder/indland/regeringen-dropper-saerlig-groenlandsk-foraeldreskabstest](https://www.dr.dk/nyheder/indland/regeringen-dropper-saerlig-groenlandsk-foraeldreskabstest)
But this process is now abadoned at the request of the Greenlandic homerule. Which is super weird as it was allegedly a veryimportant issue to fix. What gives?

An option might be helping this young woman with counseling and parenting classes. She’s very young. A mentor or a helpful caseworker could be useful since we don’t actually know how she would parent.
