I’m not playing devil’s advocate, assuming the data is correct, renewables are being shut down in favor of mazut plants because restarting them is too costly. Night power cuts happen because our grid can’t handle the load. Even with more renewables, we’d still need efficient, flexible power stations, storage batteries, or desalination plants to use excess energy. The issue isn’t renewables but a system crippled by mismanagement and corruption. Instead of investing in modular clean units, authorities stick with mazut, making electricity twice as expensive due to EU fines.
Cyprus already wastes more than half its renewable output, with solar cutbacks even on clear days. Our lack of storage, interconnection, and modern planning means we pay more for polluting fuels while clean energy goes unused.

Renewables aren’t always the best option. In Greece this push for renewables has also caused the prices to hike up immensely, they’re also incredibly costly and time consuming to maintain, and they also make their mountains look ugly (although that’s subjective)
