This seems silly. NATO was created to prevent invasion by Russia (or the USSR as it was then). Ukraine and Europe want to prevent future invasions by Russia of Ukraine. The logical conclusion is to have Ukraine join NATO.
The only alternative is to somehow *duplicate* NATO-like relationships to create ‚NATO in all but name.‘
