  1. Rum isn’t considered a slur, rum just means Greek. The only difference is it’s more commonly used for Greeks outside of Greece, whilst Yunan is for Greeks from Greece, although both can be interchangeable

Idiots are gonna be idiots. A random settler blabbering nonsense is even worse than a random racist on YouTube comments though, as in there’s nothing to take seriously unless you happen to came across the said scum in real life circumstances.

Also, Rum isn’t an archaic term. It’s still in use.

No hate on this. Flag is red line for most Turk be sure even if a US citizen try to do this thing he/she would shot down

    “History page“ about Cyprus.

You go in and see only photos of Denktaş.

they’re doing propaganda on the matter so much. it’s sickening how much they try to make you hate the “Rum”

never ever do they say Kıbrıslı Rum (Greek Cypriot) or anything that resembles it. They wanna make the Greek speaking Cypriots seem like out of body “things”. Makes it easier to hate.

while it’s true that a gruesome war was happening and the Turkish speaking Cypriots were helpless (rapes and murders happening all over the place) especially when it came to numbers, and Turkey’s guarantor actions were really of help to everyone. it was when they broke the law (the one they’re trying to justify there) it came crashing down and became obvious that they were simply trying to colonize this island.

now over half the ID’d population is Turks and *WE* are being shown as the racists because they “saved” us and we’re ungrateful. They just throw money at us and the meaningful population shuts up.

  6. Yeah, a random Turkish instagram guy is a great representative of the Turkish side and totally shows they are completely hateful (!)

Btw post itself is completely disgusting, even though we are really sensible about Turkish flag, claiming that it is not a problem when person is killed because of a flag is just extreme.

  7. Tbf does racism against Turks not exist with Greeks? You can’t claim to be the victim when you do the same thing. It’s just hypocritical

Actually, the term Rum isn’t archaic. Only Greeks which is citizen of Greece is called as „Yunan“ in Turkish. The rest like Anatolians, Cypriots, Levantines named as „Rum“ in Turkish

Nearly every Turk I’ve met, especially the ones here on Reddit, always try and excuse this event as “if you touch the Turkish flag you’re going to get killed” and that he forfeit his rights to life because he “violated the Turkish flag”

It’s crazy how deep the hatred of some people stems. They’ll defend such barbaric actions because they happened on their side. If a Greek ever killed a Turk because of the same reason there would be riots in Turkey.

The people who say “nobody actually believes this” has never talked to any Turks outside of Turkey or the average Turkish citizen on the internet (unfortunately, these people being in the tens of millions)

I noticed this weird mentality of some Turks regarding symbols like a flag. For them its a huge insult to desecrate the turkish flag, quite worth killing a person who is responsible in such an act. Imagine to kill a person for a piece of fabric.

After two times reading this fb post, only thing disturbing from my perspective is writing „r*m“ instead of „rum“ as in disguising a swear word:S

The rest of the post is opinion about the incident and says it was legal.

Just a reminder legal doesnt mean right or good. Never mix these concepts. Something can be legal and wrong, or good and illegal.

There is no hate. Some people are just selfrighteous bigots. He probably treats Turkish opposition the same way.

As for the shooting, from Turkish point of view, it certainly is justified. Greek, Turk, British. It doesn’t matter. You can’t just walk in there and bring our flag down. To this day, it is a crime to deface the Turkish flag. We take those kinds of things seriously. You should do the same if someone tried the same. I would not blame you.

    > I never realised how hateful the Turkish side is on this topic.

Hatred is indeed an emotion that we feel strongly for those we consider our enemies. And those who are uneducated on the matter, might see Solomou as an enemy, towards whom we ought to feel enmity and great contempt. And normally, I would encourage that. The contempt shown to a foe should be absolute and without mercy. But in this case, Solomou isn’t a foe. He’s the victim of an unjust invasion and an unjust occupation. He used up all the courage in his heart, knowing that it might end up with him dying, and indeed, he died a martyr for his cause. But those people here who somehow think his death was meaningless because it was just a piece of cloth disgust me. Their outlook is so twisted, that they do not understand what it means for a man to sacrifice his all for his homeland. I don’t know much about the man, but I know that he probably lost a lot of things, and had nothing else to give to his nation other than his life. That’s wasn’t just for a piece of cloth, however. The flag isn’t a piece of cloth. Had he succeeded, he would have become a hero, and now he became a martyr.

  14. Incedible, not a single piece of information provided is correct. 3 whole paragraphs of utter shite.

  15. It’s not about Turks, if you cross a border in a recent battle field and climb the enemy’s flag pole in front of armed forces it’s not a big surprise to get shot. It’s not hateful. Flag to be protected, that is one of the main purpose of a soldier.

Soo… If I go to ELAM’s whateversocialmedia page, can I say all GC are full of hatred on whatever topic?
