Version 3 – of the graphs above, this time including scatterplots.
Note: Crime index slide is mislabeled. Lower state ranking = lower crime, NOT higher.
Was interested in looking at per-capita state level gun homicide rates plotted against other relevant metrics. r2 values included in the graphs as well.
Gun homicide mortality stats were pulled directly from the CDC and 2015-2019 was chosen due to a pre-packaged file from the CDC providing rates averaged over that time span.
Other metrics and data were pulled from websites in years as close as possible to the 2015-2019 date range. Looking to update if more relevant/recent data is available. This was the best I could find.

Dumb Question – why a different R squared when the graph goes from bar charts to scatter plots for the same question?
That’s a really low rsquared. It suggests poor correlation.
Maryland is truly a bizarre one when it comes to looking at wealth/HDI versus gun crimes
Why is the orange line in the first image saying “moran”?
That’s a pretty clear non-correlation
Gun homicide statistics are one thing.
Gun violence statistics are substantially higher. Look at how many people get shot, not just the deaths.
